Cloud AI engines run on your own API key from Google or Anthropic and are billed by them directly; the on-device engine has no usage cost at all. FAQ
The questions people actually ask.
Do I have to log into WhatsApp?
No. WhatAI never asks for your WhatsApp number, password or QR scan, and it does not link your account. It reads the incoming notification and replies to it — exactly what you do from your lock screen.
Will I get banned from WhatsApp?
WhatAI does not use an unofficial WhatsApp client, an API workaround, or an automation bot pretending to be you. It uses Android’s own notification reply action, which is a standard feature of the operating system. That said, sending unsolicited bulk messages can get any number restricted, whoever sends them — so use it to answer people who message you, not to broadcast.
Does it work when the app is closed?
Yes. That is the point. A keep-alive service holds the notification listener open, a watchdog revives it if Android kills it, and it restarts itself after a reboot. The Reliability screen scores your setup out of 100 and tells you the one setting to change on your phone.
Can it reply without any AI at all?
Yes, and unlimited. Word-for-word rules match on contains, equals, starts with, regex or any message, and send your text back exactly as written. Nothing is generated. Many people never turn the AI on.
Will it reply to my OTP messages?
No. Messages carrying one-time codes, 2FA codes, verification codes, passwords, PINs or card details are detected and skipped. The filter errs on the side of caution — a few extra skips are better than one auto reply to your bank.
Does it work in group chats?
Only if you switch it on. Groups are a separate toggle from your one-to-one audience setting, and they are off by default.
What does the on-device AI need?
A compatible model file, downloaded or imported once inside the app. It is not bundled with the download, so the app stays small. After that the AI works with no internet at all.
Which languages does it reply in?
The AI engines answer in whatever language the incoming message is written in, including mixed scripts like Hinglish. Word-for-word rules send exactly the text you typed, in any language.
Is WhatsApp Business supported?
Yes. Both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business are recognised, and you can point different reply profiles at different kinds of contact.
